Ever since the introduction of the internet in the Philippines, on March 29, 1994, the Filipinos has been buzzing with ideas as of what brilliant things to do with it. Filipinos established different sites, like the first Philippine-based, public access Bulletin Board System. With the access of the internet and with time, Filipinos are able to access other countries. We are able to make business connections, making import and export available, making the business industry go up, and with that, so is the new media industry. Technology is vital to a country's success, that the Philippines keep on pursuing the latest technologies available. All statistics related new media is going up, due to scholars, students, gamers,...etc, who keep pursuing what they need from the internet. With different kinds of people, who needs the internet nowadays the survey between various countries in Asia on "How much time spent on the internet" has been conducted on January 2014:
On this chart, the Philippines topped on how many hours spent on the internet with the access of a laptop /desktop, proving that the status of the new media industry in the Philippines is going up.
Those who have access to the internet, do sorts of things that interest them, dividing it to areas, like gaming, music&arts, business, studying,...etc, and these areas are the main reasons that the new media in the Philippines keep on improving. The internet cafe business in the Philippines is booming,
due to the online gaming area, a survey shows that 77%(summing up Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) plays online games, resulting for the Philippines to import more games from other countries. Downloading also is a big factor, boosting up the sales of music, images, documents,...etc. Focusing more on the status of new media, when it comes to the connection of the Filipinos to it, I have found that 33% of Filipinos have access the internet, this may be a low percentage but it is studied that there is so much room for growth, like for those who are left behind by the new technology, those aged 30+-less than one quarter of consumers aged in their 30s(24%) access the internet, 13% of the consumers access on their 40s and those aged 50+ is just 4%. Computers are a necessity in school, because of research purposes. Cellphones are a constant need for contacting friends and family and with these are computer social medias such Skype, Facebook , Twitter,...etc. It's just endless.
With all these statistics, it is not hard to say that the new media industry in the Philippines are going up. The Filipinos are practically addicted to new technology and it's benefits. A recent study of TIME magazine shows that Makati City, Philippines is the "Selfie Capital of the World", I know it sounds silly, having that kind of achievement, but it's good, it means that there's a lot of cellphones and it also means we are active at social media sites. In my opinion, about how is the state of the new media industry in the Philippines is?, well, it IS growing. But the Filipinos are being stupid about it, Facebook gives us bragging rights, the internet is too vast for us to comprehend . The politicians, too, are taking over the cyber world and the more we use THAT improving status of the new media industry in the Philippines, to keep using it the stupid way and we keep tolerating idiocy, the more the corrupt we'll take over. Thinking of it all, while researching all those statistics, made me think, are we using it properly?
We should use that growing industry, the internet, the cyber world where the government still hasn't fully taken control, to fight.
